AI visibility

AI visibility measures how often AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews mention, recommend or cite your business when people ask them relevant questions.

Rankings tell you where your pages appear in Google. AI visibility tells you whether AI assistants bring up your business at all. When someone asks ChatGPT “what’s the best coffee subscription for espresso lovers?” or asks Perplexity “who fixes tankless water heaters in Austin?”, does your name come up? Is your website cited as a source? How often, compared with competitors?

Why it matters

More people now start research in AI assistants, especially for questions that need a recommendation or explanation. Those answers usually name only a handful of businesses. If you’re not among them, you’re invisible in that conversation, no matter where you rank in Google.

Bean & Barrel Coffee ranks well in Google for several coffee subscription searches. But when it checks 20 real customer questions in five AI assistants, it’s mentioned in only three answers, while two larger roasters appear in most. That gap wouldn’t show up in any traditional SEO report.

What gets measured

AI visibility tracking typically runs a fixed set of prompts (questions your customers really ask) through several assistants on a schedule and records:

  • Mentions: is the business named in the answer?
  • Citations: is your website linked as a source? (see LLM citations)
  • Position: is it recommended first, or listed fifth?
  • Competitors: which other businesses appear for the same questions?
  • Change over time, since answers shift as models and sources update

Comparing your mentions with competitors’ gives an AI version of share of voice.

Why it’s tricky to measure

AI answers aren’t fixed. The same question can produce different answers on different days, for different users, or in different locations. Answers that use live search also depend on what the assistant’s search finds at that moment. So single checks are anecdotes. Tracking the same prompts repeatedly is what makes the numbers meaningful.

How to improve it

The work overlaps with generative engine optimization:

  1. Let AI search crawlers reach your site.
  2. Publish clear, specific pages that answer the questions you’re tracking.
  3. Earn mentions in places AI tools trust: reviews, local news, industry roundups, forums.
  4. Keep your business facts consistent everywhere.
  5. Recheck the same prompts after changes, and give it time.

Common mistakes

  • Testing one question once in one assistant and drawing conclusions
  • Choosing prompts nobody actually asks
  • Focusing only on your own site when most mentions come from what others say about you

How to track it

RankThat’s AI Visibility checks whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your business for questions you choose, compared with competitors. AI visibility tracking runs 4 times a month on the Professional plan and without limits on Enterprise.
