Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is shaping content so that search features and AI assistants can lift it as a direct answer, whether in a featured snippet, a voice reply or an AI-generated response.

An answer engine is any system that replies to a question with an answer instead of a list of links. Google’s featured snippets and voice results were the first widespread examples. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google’s AI features are the current ones. Answer engine optimization is writing and structuring your content so these systems can find a clear answer in it and use it.

AEO, GEO and SEO

The terms overlap heavily. AEO came first and grew out of featured snippets and voice search. Generative engine optimization is the newer term focused on AI-written answers. In practice, both build on regular SEO: a page that isn’t crawlable, indexed or trusted won’t be used as an answer anywhere. Think of AEO as the formatting and clarity layer on top.

What answer-ready content looks like

A clear question. Use the question people actually ask as a heading.

A direct answer first. One or two sentences that would make sense if quoted on their own.

Then the detail. Exceptions, steps, costs, examples.

## How often should you flush a water heater?

Flush a tank water heater about once a year. In areas with hard water,
like much of central Texas, every six months helps prevent sediment
buildup that causes popping noises and shortens the tank's life.

That short block could be lifted into a featured snippet, a voice reply, a People Also Ask answer or an AI response, and it would still be accurate and useful.

Why it matters

Coastline Plumbing gets asked the same twenty questions on the phone every month. Each is a chance to be the answer when people ask Google or an AI assistant first. A page that answers “how often should I flush my water heater” clearly, with local context, can be quoted in AI Overviews and assistant replies, putting the business name in front of homeowners right when they’re thinking about maintenance.

Good habits

  • Collect real customer questions from calls, emails, reviews and chat
  • Answer each one plainly before adding nuance
  • Use real lists and tables for steps and comparisons
  • Include specifics: numbers, timeframes, costs, locations
  • Keep answers up to date and consistent across pages
  • Show who wrote it and why they know

Common mistakes

  • Leaning on FAQ schema. Since 2023, FAQ rich results only show for authoritative government and health sites. Good on-page answers matter more than the markup.
  • Burying the answer under long introductions.
  • Thin Q&A pages, one per question, with a sentence each.
  • Answers that contradict each other on different pages of your site.

How to measure

Track featured snippets and People Also Ask appearances in your rank tracking, and check AI answers directly. RankThat’s AI Visibility checks whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your business for questions about your services and area.
