Google says local results are based on three things: relevance, prominence and distance. Distance, which SEOs usually call proximity, is the one you can’t optimize away. If someone in north Austin searches “dentist”, Google prefers dentists near them, because that’s usually what the searcher wants.
How Google measures it
- If the search names a place (“dentist in Round Rock”), Google measures distance from that place.
- If it doesn’t (“dentist near me” or just “dentist”), Google uses the searcher’s location, from their device or other signals.
- The business’s location is the address in its Google Business Profile. For a service area business with a hidden address, Google still uses that underlying address. Listing service areas doesn’t change it.
Why it matters
Proximity explains the most common complaint in local SEO: “We rank first when I search from the office, but customers say they can’t find us.” Brightside Dental’s main office is downtown. From the office, it’s first in the local pack for “dentist”. Five miles south, it’s eighth. Nothing is broken; the searcher is simply closer to other practices.
It also explains why a business that’s a weaker match can outrank a stronger one. A nearby practice with 60 reviews can beat a practice across town with 400, for searchers close to the first one.
What you can do about it
You can’t move closer to every customer, but you can widen the area where you compete:
- Increase prominence. More reviews, more local links and mentions, a stronger website. Prominence lets you rank further from your pin.
- Strengthen relevance. The right primary category and complete services help Google see you as the best match, not just a nearby one.
- Create useful pages for the areas you serve, with real local content.
- Open a real second location if the business genuinely needs one. A staffed office in a new area is legitimate; a fake address isn’t.
Common mistakes
- Judging rankings from one spot. Your office is the best-case location for you.
- Using virtual offices to fake proximity in other cities. This breaks Google’s guidelines and leads to suspensions.
- Keyword-stuffing city names into the business name to overcome distance.
- Expecting service area settings to extend reach. They don’t affect ranking distance.
How to see it
A local rank grid is the clearest view of proximity. RankThat’s Local SEO tools include a Local Rank Grid that maps your local pack position from many points around your business, so you can see where distance starts to cost you and whether your work is pushing that boundary out.
