Rank tracking

Rank tracking is regularly checking where your pages appear in search results for a chosen list of keywords, from a set location and device, so you can see changes over time.

Searching Google yourself is a poor way to check rankings. Your results are shaped by your location, device, language and history, and you can’t search 200 keywords every morning. Rank tracking automates the job: a tool runs your chosen keywords through Google on a schedule, from a fixed location and device, and records where your site appears.

What a rank tracker records

  • Position for each keyword, usually the top 100 results
  • The ranking URL, which page ranked, and when it changes
  • Device: desktop and mobile separately, since results differ
  • Location: country, city or even ZIP code, which matters hugely for local searches
  • SERP features on the page, such as AI Overviews, the local pack and featured snippets
  • Competitors’ positions for the same keywords

Why it matters

Rank tracking is the most direct way to see whether specific SEO work is paying off. When Brightside Dental rewrites its dental implants page, the tracker shows “dental implants austin” moving from 14 to 6 over five weeks. It also spots problems early: if a key page drops from 3 to 11 overnight, you know days before it shows clearly in traffic.

It also catches keyword cannibalization. If the ranking URL for a keyword keeps switching between two of your pages, they’re competing.

Rank tracking versus Search Console

They complement each other. Search Console finds queries you didn’t know about; rank tracking monitors the ones you care about most.

How often to check

Daily tracking helps during migrations, launches and algorithm updates, or for very competitive terms. Weekly is enough for most small business keyword sets. Either way, judge trends over weeks, not single-day moves.

Local rank tracking

For local businesses, one tracking location is a single sample. A plumber’s ranking in the map pack can vary block by block. That’s why local SEO also uses a local rank grid to check positions from many points across a service area.

Common mistakes

  • Tracking vanity keywords that no customer searches
  • Tracking only desktop when most customers search on phones
  • Reacting to daily fluctuations
  • Ignoring which page ranks

How to track

RankThat’s Rank Tracker checks Google positions daily or weekly per project, on desktop and mobile, from any location. It records the ranking page and URL switching, calculates share of voice, and shows a 12-week visibility trend.
